Avoidable Emergency Department Utilization in St. Louis

MHI is using its claims data asset to help the St. Louis community understand how the commercially-insured population utilizes Emergency Departments (ED) for care.  Better health outcomes and lower costs are tied to choosing the best care in the right setting.

MHI and its partner organizations formed the Collaboration to Improve Appropriate Emergency Department (ED) Utilization to find collaborative ways to reduce potentially-avoidable ED visits in St. Louis.  As part of its work, MHI and its partners developed an Provider Playbook and an Employer Playbook.

Click here to view the Employer Playbook, a resource supporting employers in communicating to employees about avoidable ED use and sharing actions they can take to the access the best care in the right setting.

Health care’s challenges are too complex for any one stakeholder to solve.  All who provide, pay for and receive health care have a responsibility to work together to improve the quality and affordability of care.  Please email us with any ideas on how we can further support the community’s efforts.
